Claire's Story — A “Yes-Sayer” Success Story

It happened again.

Claire watched her colleague leave the office, smiling as he called out, “Thanks, Claire! You're a lifesaver. Have a great evening!”

“Enjoy your evening, too!” she replied, waving cheerfully.

The door closed, and Claire let out a long breath. How on earth did I do that again?

Just five minutes earlier, her colleague had come to her desk with that familiar look. “Claire, could you take over this proposal? The deadline is tomorrow, and something really important has come up tonight.” She knew exactly what his important plans were: an evening with his girlfriend. She also knew what she wanted to say: No. Not tonight.

But before she could even think, she heard herself saying, “Yes, sure. No problem!”

Now she sat looking at the extra work. She had been looking forward to a lovely, relaxing evening for herself. Well, that was gone. By the time she got home, it would be another frozen pizza. It was a familiar mixture of exhaustion, frustration, and disbelief.

Why Can't I Just Say No?

That evening, Claire found herself browsing online for books about setting boundaries. Again.

She already had several on her bookshelf: The Art of Saying No, Healthy Boundaries, Put Yourself First. She had read them all. She understood the psychology perfectly. She knew she wasn't responsible for everyone else's happiness. Yet she couldn't stop. It happened with friends, family, and in relationships. She was constantly offering her time and energy—often before anyone even asked.

Claire wasn't new to personal development; she had even been to therapy. She knew where it came from. Growing up, her mother was always overwhelmed, and her brother was frequently ill and needed a lot of attention. Claire learned early on to be the easy, helpful one who didn't make waves. Being helpful was how she received appreciation and found her place in the family.

She understood the pattern completely. And she was deeply tired of knowing exactly what she should do, only to watch herself do the exact opposite.

The Post That Changed Claire's Direction

While scrolling through search results that night, something caught her eye:

Shift the Lens — What if your lack of boundaries is actually your superpower in disguise?

Stop fighting your nature.

It's time to DEVELOP your Yes-Sayer from an addictive habit into your ultimate strong suit.

Claire stopped scrolling. Stop fighting my nature?

Something about that sentence felt strangely relieving. She had spent years trying to change herself, practicing saying no, and forcing herself to be more assertive. Could there really be another way?

She clicked. The program was online, really affordable, and included live Q&A meetings, coaching demonstrations, and a support buddy system. Intrigued by the idea of exploring this with others rather than reading another book alone, she enrolled.

The First Surprise

During the very first Q&A meeting Claire attended, the trainer coached a participant who struggled with over-responsibility, especially since he'd moved into a leadership position. His micromanaging was driving his team nuts, and he was completely overwhelmed by the responsibility he felt for everything.

During the live coaching demonstration, the participant discovered that hidden within his compulsive over-responsibility was something quite different from what he had expected: the drive to have an impact.

When the trainer invited him to imagine having an impact freely, without fear or pressure, his entire presence shifted. As he described what he imagined, his voice changed from hesitant to strong and enthusiastic.

No longer was his drive expressing itself in a fear-based, self-protective, and therefore compulsive way—having to have an impact everywhere, all the time. Instead, he imagined himself discussing a new project with his team, confidently inspiring them with his vision of how they would deliver a perfect result together

The underlying movement—having an impact—was exactly the same, but its expression was entirely different.

Claire watched, fascinated. She was witnessing how a challenging trait could have carried an intelligent, positive blueprint all along. The trait itself didn't need to disappear or become something else. Its Signature, its blueprint, was actually something really good.

"There's still some work to do," the trainer explained. "Imagining something and actually living it are two different things. That's where practicing Adult Self-Care comes in."

 A Child Isn't a Deficient Grown-Up

Then the trainer turned to the group.

"Think about a six-year-old child. Would you call that child deficient because they can't yet handle adult responsibilities? Of course not! We recognize that the child is still growing. We even enjoy watching children mature, and we naturally feel compassion and a desire to care for and support them.

"But when we encounter immaturity in ourselves, we call it a deficiency. Something is wrong with us. We need to overcome it, heal it, transform it, transcend it. Yet, when we're honest, we just want it to go away. But we're throwing the baby out with the bathwater!

"Each of our inner aspects carries powerful qualities that we need just as much as they need us. They need our care and support to mature, and we need the incredible potential they carry within them."

Claire thought about her Yes-Sayer. She had spent so much time wishing it would disappear. She had never considered that she might actually need it.

"And that's where we need to shift the lens," the trainer continued.

"These aspects of us are not broken. Their natural maturation simply paused when they felt alone and unsafe in stressful situations. Instinctively, they protected themselves in whatever way worked at the time. That protection is what we now experience as our challenging traits.

"And those strategies kept us safe when we were children. But it's not exactly a good idea to let your six-year-old chair a board meeting!"

Claire chuckled. So true! She immediately thought of a colleague she'd often described as behaving like a little child who didn't get what he wanted.

"For these aspects to mature, they need Adult Self-Care," the trainer continued. "And practicing Adult Self-Care isn't about spending a day at the spa! That's great, of course, but it has nothing to do with what your inner aspects actually need. It's about seeing your inner aspect, genuinely wanting it, and wanting to care for and support it. That's how you create the safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment our immature aspects need to unpause their own organic, innate, intelligent development."

Claire smiled. That makes so much sense, she thought.

And she was surprised to notice that simply recognizing this had already softened her feelings toward her Yes-Sayer.

For the first time, she was beginning to look at her Yes-Sayer with curiosity rather than frustration.

She couldn't wait to discover what was hidden within it.

The Signature Discovery - What Is My "Yes-Sayer" Actually Doing?

Right after the demonstration, Claire joined a breakout room with Stef, her support buddy. They had been given a series of steps to strip away their judgments and discover the unique Signature hidden within a challenging trait.

“Okay, Claire,” Stef said with a smile. “Let's look at the movement itself. Imagine an alien is watching you, someone who has no idea what's right or wrong. What would it actually see when your Yes-Sayer takes over?”

“Well,” Claire thought for a moment, “someone asks for help, and I agree to help them. And I look happy to do it.”

“Are you?”

“Of course not! That's the problem!”

“Let's look closer,” Stef said. “When someone comes to you for help, how do you experience that?”

“I do love helping people,” Claire admitted. “But with my colleague, I knew he was taking advantage of me to avoid dealing with his own problem. I can naturally sense when someone is stressed, but I also know exactly what they could do themselves.”

She paused, surprised by her own words.

“Tell me more,” Stef said.

“Take my colleague,” Claire continued, getting animated. “After he left, I kept thinking that he should just be honest with his girlfriend about being late! I always have plenty of ideas about how people can approach their own problems. I think about it all the time.”

“And what would you really enjoy doing?”

Claire didn't hesitate. “Telling them! So I don't have to do it!”

They both laughed.

The Signature Appears

Stef looked at his notes. “Let's see what we have. When you become aware of someone's problem, you naturally sense what's going on. You immediately see another way they could approach it. And what you really want is for them to find a good way to handle it themselves, instead of leaving you to do it for them.”

Claire thought about it. “Yes, exactly! I don't mind helping at all. I just don't want to end up doing everything myself!”

“So the movement isn't simply about doing things for people,” Stef pointed out.

“Exactly!” Claire grew quiet for a moment. Then she smiled. “I never really wanted to stop helping. I just wanted to stop doing everything for everyone. And I actually like that part of me!”

Together, they formulated her complete, underlying Signature:

“When I become aware of a problem, I see a new way to approach it, and I act.”

Stef looked at her. “There's something I'm curious about, Claire. Why didn't you tell people earlier what they could do? Why did you keep all those ideas in your head instead of sharing them?”

Claire looked down. “I actually did, at first. Especially with my brother. I was the older sibling, and he was ill a lot. Whenever I suggested another way of handling things, it was taken as an excuse to get out of helping, as though I just wanted the easy way out. In the end, I was always the one who had to give in.”

She paused. “And my mom could get so overwhelmed. She still has a strong tendency toward drama, and I feel guilty so easily. I know where my Yes-Sayer developed this compulsive behavior.”

Stef nodded. “I see. And now you have the tools of Adult Self-Care. With a little practice, creating this nurturing space becomes so natural. It's exactly what this aspect needs to continue maturing organically. And the Guided Internal Process meditations are really wonderful. I do them in the evening, and I always sleep so well afterward!”

“True,” Claire agreed. “And I can't wait to support my Yes-Sayer in that process!”

She smiled. “I really love imagining it expressing itself as a proud "Yes-Sayer", without pressure, fear, or guilt. Just freely enjoying what it naturally loves doing, sharing good solutions.”

For the first time, Claire felt curious, excited, and genuinely appreciative of this aspect of herself.

Two Months Later

Claire had completed the Shift the Lens program several weeks earlier but had chosen to stay on as a member to remain connected to the community. The Q&As and Signature coaching demonstrations were really inspiring, and she enjoyed having a support buddy and exploring other Signatures together.

Part of the live meetings was reserved for one participant to share their experiences and inspire others along the way. This time, Claire decided to take that opportunity.

“I want to tell you what happened with my Yes-Sayer,” Claire began. “Because, well, it's actually more active than ever! But the difference is incredible.”

“After discovering my Signature, I started practicing Adult Self-Care with that aspect of me. And it was much easier than I thought it would be. Step by step, I could feel my Yes-Sayer becoming more and more comfortable expressing its Signature, its blueprint, without all that pressure and fear.”

“Now, when someone comes to me with a problem, I still feel that familiar ‘yes’ rising inside. But instead of saying, ‘Yes, I'll do it,’ I find myself saying, ‘Yes, I'd love to help! Have you thought about approaching it this way?’ And I share my ideas. I absolutely love it, and I don't feel a shred of resentment or guilt afterward.”

She sat up a little straighter.

“And it has completely changed how I see my future. I've wanted to apply for a team leader position for a long time, but I always feared people would walk all over me. Now I see that my ability to recognize problems and help people find their own solutions is actually a wonderful leadership quality. I can imagine myself being an incredible team leader!”

Her voice softened as she shared what had become the most meaningful change of all.

“But the most beautiful change has been with my mother. She frequently asks me to manage her online accounts and paperwork, which I used to do with so much anger and resentment. But through this process, I began to see that she was simply feeling insecure with technology. Now my Yes-Sayer steps in freely, encouraging her to learn how to do some of these things herself.”

She smiled.

“And something else happened. I didn't have to force myself to forgive her or fight my resentment. The blame I'd carried toward her for making me the way I am just melted away. Because I started to genuinely like who I am.”

Claire laughed.

"And I'm only getting started!”

And What About Your Yes-Sayer?

This is what participants experience again and again with the traits they've struggled with often for years.

Of course, your Yes-Sayer has its own story. And its own unique Signature.

Maybe you say yes because doing things for others is the only way you've ever really felt valuable. Your Yes-Sayer would then carry a very different Signature from Claire's, with its own wonderful potential for a mature, enriching expression.

Whatever strategy your Yes-Sayer uses, whatever intelligent Signature you discover, the way it expresses itself right now IS an authentic expression of your nature. And within it lies the innate blueprint to mature into a truly enjoyable, contributive expression.

Participants’ Voices — “The Postponer”

“I wish I had known this earlier. It would have saved me so much frustration, money, and pain. My ‘Postponer’ had been a lifelong enemy until I discovered its true value. Its Signature—‘Creating a gap between impulse and action’—turned out to be an incredible capacity. As it matured, I became much more aware of what I truly wanted and began investing my time and energy in what genuinely mattered to me.”

 Participants’ Voices — “The Controller”

“I spent my whole life trying to control everything. My ‘Controller’ cost me so much—not only my peace and joy, but eventually almost my marriage.

When I discovered that this trait held the intelligent capacity to ‘direct movement in a desired direction’ and began practicing Adult Self-Care, everything changed. Not only in my marriage, but also in my career and my relationship with my children.”
